Trojans Baseball Splits Doubleheader with St. Augustine’s

Box Score ETTRICK, VA (April 9, 2017) – The Virginia State University baseball team managed a split with St. Augustine's University, falling in game one 4-1 while taking game two by an 7-1 score this afternoon at Whaley Colbert Field.

St. Augustine's wasted no time in game one, plating two runs in the first three innings of the game securing a 2-0 lead.

VSU answered in the fourth inning by scoring one run. Senior Jahleel Sewer (Hampton, VA) doubled to left field scoring junior Jamar Hinton (Dinwiddie, VA) recording an RBI. The Trojans cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Falcons when added two more runs in the last two innings of the game with SAU taking the 4-1 win.

In game two, the VSU bats came alive. VSU secured an early a 1-0 lead, the Trojans continued with the same momentum in the third inning after sophomore Sisqo Scott (Hampton, VA) launched a single to center field scoring Tashaun Taylor (Richmond, VA) recording an RBI.  VSU continued with hot hitting with Hinton single to left field scored Scott recording an RBI. Up next a walk by the pitcher advanced everyone on base and plated David Markins (Colonial Heights, VA) bring the score 4-0 at bottom of the third inning. The Falcons answered adding its first and final run of the game in the top of the fifth inning.
 
In the bottom of the sixth inning junior Michael Liburd (Suffolk, VA) launched a homer scoring senior Julian White (Yorktown, VA). VSU would add one more run to finish out the inning and securing the 7-1 victory. On the mound for VSU was junior Gerald Taylor (Dinwiddie, VA) who allowed seven hits, one runs, two strikeouts and two walks.

The split moves VSU to 14-19 overall, 3-9 in CIAA play while St. Augustine's now stands at 16-25, 5-6 in CIAA play. The Trojans will look to improve as they prepare for the 2017 CIAA Baseball Championships on May 4-6th on the campus of Virginia State.

VSU will return to the field on Wednesday, April 12th, as they host the Rams of Shepherd University in a non-conference doubleheader with first pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m.
