Box Score ETTRICK, VA- After a six game winning streak, the VSU Trojan baseball team took a 7-4 loss to the Cavaliers of University Virginia at Wise in the final game of their weekend series on March 5.
Despite moving to an 8-5 overall record, senior catcher David Markins (Colonial Heights, VA) led the charge for the Trojans with 2 home runs and 3 RBI's. Also crossing home plate for VSU were sophomore Sisqo Scott (Hampton, VA) and junior Jamar Hinton (Dinwiddie, VA)
The Cavaliers took control of the game early with 2 runs at the top of the first inning. With no home plate action in the 2nd and 3rd inning, the Trojans regained momentum at the bottom of the 4th inning with a homer to left field by Markins. After hitting a single and advancing to second, Hinton tied the game 2-2, giving junior Michael Liburd (Suffolk, VA) an RBI.
Answering back at the top of the 5th, 6th and 7th inning, UVA-Wise ran ahead with a lead of 7-2. Keeping their head in the game, Scott set the play up for VSU at the bottom of the 8th, securing a double. After a Trojans fly out to left field, Markins entered the box smacking a homer into left field, giving VSU 2 additional runs.
The 9th inning breezed by, ruling the game in favor of UVA-Wise.
On the mound for VSU was senior Colton Gunn (Dinwiddie, VA ) with 2 strike out in his 5 innings and senior Chris Carter (Ruther Glen, VA) taking over for the remaining 4 innings with a single strike out.
The Trojans will return to the field on Friday, March 10 for a single against Mercy College beginning at 4pm.
