Chowan University Takes Two from Virginia State University

ETTRICK, VA – In the final doubleheader games of the weekend series at Whaley Colbert Field, Virginia State fell to Chowan University, (6-4, 6-0) March 26..

With the loss, the Trojans (12-13, 1-3 CIAA) will look to regroup as they prepare for the 2017 CIAA Baseball Championships on May 4-6 on the campus of Virginia State.

The Hawks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, with a homerun scored Lanier.

VSU answered in the bottom of the first inning with a sacrifice ground by Gunn to short stop which plated Scott. Followed by Jamar Hinton's double to left field, recording an RBI, which scored Sewer making it a tie game.  Chowan answered by adding two runs in the top of the second inning securing a 4-2 lead. The Trojans continued to rally with Julian White securing a homerun to cut the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. VSU then capitalized on a walk by the pitcher which plated Markins adding the final run of the competition. The Hawks added two additional runs in the fifth inning to secure the victory.

Starting off on the mound for VSU was junior Gerald Taylor who allowed seven hits, six runs, and two walks in the four innings pitched. Followed by sophomore Jordan Claytor who wrapped things up for the Trojans allowing three hits, no runs, one walks, and one strikeout in the three innings pitched.

In game two, both team had impressive work offensively and defensively with a tug-a-war in the first six innings of the game. Both teams remained scoreless in the first six innings. In the seventh inning the Hawks added six runs to secure the victory. The Trojans finished the competition with two hits and the Hawks recording seven. Starting on the mound for VSU was junior Brandon Diamond who allowed four hits, four runs, five walks, and one strikeout in the six inning pitched. Closing things out for the Trojans was sophomore Jordan Claytor allowing three hits, two runs, one walk, and two strikeouts.

Virgina State will travel for a CIAA conference matchup against Winston-Salem State University on April 1st-2nd with a four-game road series. The double header on Saturday will begin at 1 pm and the final doubleheader games on Sunday with first pitch slated for 1pm.
