BASEBALL SPLITS DAY ONE AGAINST CHOWAN UNIVERSITY

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ETTRICK, VA - The Virginia State University baseball team (12-11, 1-1 CIAA) split the opening doubleheader series to Chowan University (10-18, 1-3 CIAA) after taking a 1-6 loss, but ended the day with a 4-0 win at Whaley Colbert Field this afternoon. The victory gives the Trojans its first in conference play of the season.
 
Game One:
The Hawks of the Chowan University grasped an early lead with adding 2 runs at the first inning. VSU gained momentum at the bottom of the second inning. Leading off the Trojans, Brandon Diamond grounded out to short stop scoring Gunn. The Hawks then took control of the game, with a score of 6-1 at the end of 6 innings. Chowan added 4 additional runs throughout the remaining innings securing the victory.

On the mound for VSU was sophomore Jacob Wells who allowed nine hits, six runs, one walk, and two strikeouts in the seven innings pitched.
 
Game Two:
The Trojans grasped an early 2-0 lead at the bottom of the third inning which helped secure the victory. Starting things off at the plate for VSU was senior Tashuan Taylor who singled to right field, recording an RBI, scoring Sisqo Scott. Followed by Jahleel Sewer double to center field, recording an RBI, scoring Taylor. The VSU Trojans continued to rally at the plate with Brandon Diamond single, recording 2 RBIs, scoring White and Hinton. The Hawks remained scoreless in the competition. The Trojans outhit the Hawks 9 to 2 in the game.

Defensively, VSU was led by junior Jamar Hinton on the mound who had an impressive game striking out nine of the 23 batters faced, and only allowing two hits.  

VSU will wrap up the series against Chowan University on Sunday, Mar. 26, in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association doubleheader action with first pitch slated for 1pm.
