Baseball Shows No Mercy in Game 3 Against Mavericks

Box Score

ETTRICK, VA-The VSU Trojan Baseball team showed no mercy against the Mavericks of Mercy College in game 3 of their weekend series on March 12. After 9 innings, the Trojans grasped a 19-10 victory.

VSU moves to a 9-7 overall record as they prepare for the 2017 CIAA Baseball Championships on May 4-6 on the campus of Virginia State.

Taking control of the game for the Trojans were junior Jamar Hinton senior Jahleel Sewer and senior Colton Gunn with 3 runs. Seniors Tashaun Taylor, David Markins, Julian White and sophomore Sisqo Scott each tallied 2 runs while senior Johnny Rowe and junior Brandon Diamond each collected a single.

After handing over 3 strikes, the Trojans got down to business. VSU had the bases load early in the inning after 4 batters entered the box. Hinton smacked a double to left field, bringing home Taylor and Sewer. A single to center field earned White an RBI, with Gunn crossing home plate. With continuous back to back action and numerous errors on the Mavericks; Hinton, White and Diamond advanced home. At the end of the 1st inning, VSU had a strong 6-0 led.

Mercy attempted to answer back to the top of the 2nd inning with 4 runs, but the Trojans stayed strong bringing in Sewer after a double by Gunn. The Mavericks saw no action at the top of the 3rd inning, while VSU stayed consistent with Scott running in off of a wild pitch.

With no progression in sight, Mercy did not secure a run in the 4th inning. At the bottom of the 4th, the Trojans saw fit to closely mimic their actions from the start of the game. Making sure they kept a man on base, VSU advanced 5 runners home to bring the score to 13-4.

There was a short chant of excitement from the visitor's dugout with the addition of a run at the top of the 5th inning. Hinton crossed home plate to counter the Mavericks run to bring the score to 14-5.

Attempting to keep hope alive, the Mavericks gained 2 runs in the 6th, but the Trojans showed no mercy tallying 4 runs.

Despite VSU securing their final run in the 7th inning and Mercy crossing the plate in the final 2 innings of the game, the home team was victorious with a 19-10 win.

Hinton takes the win for VSU after pitching the first 6 innings with 6 strikeouts.

The Trojans will return to the field on Wednesday, March 15 to take on Shepherd University for a doubleheader matchup. The first pitch is set for 1pm at the Whaley Colbert Baseball Field on the campus of VSU.
