Box Score ETTRICK, VA- The VSU Trojans baseball team fell to the Mercy College Mavericks, 9-3, during game 1 of the weekend series.
Braving through the cold, windy weather; senior Jahleel Sewer, junior Michael Liburd and junior Brandon Diamond put the Trojans on the board.
The Mavericks grasped an early lead with 2 runs at the top of the first inning. After two scoreless innings, VSU gained momentum at the bottom of the third. Leading off the Trojans, Diamond secured a single, while an error on Mercy would advance him to second. A ground out to the pitcher and a single by Sewer moved Diamond across the home plate to put VSU on the board.
Mercy took control of the game, with a score of 6-3 at the end of 6 innings. As the visiting team gained an additional 2 runs at the top of the 7th inning, Liburd answered back with a double. Finding space to advance around the field, Liburd gave VSU a run off of a wild pitch by Mercy.
Both teams were equally matched in the 8th inning, with a single run each. After sending the ball to center field, Sewer relied on his speed to earn the final run of the game.
VSU will return to the field on Saturday, March 11 for game 2 of the weekend series against the Mercy Mavericks. The first pitch of the single game is set for 1pm at Whaley Colbert Field.
