Box Score MURFREESBORO, NC- The Virginia State University women's basketball team took down the Lady Hawks of Chowan University on February 8 with a final score of 75-62.
The win advanced the Trojans to a 16-7 overall record, 8-5 in the conference, while the Lady Hawks are setback to a 15-8 overall record, 8-5 in the CIAA.
This was a much needed win for VSU, as they lost to Chowan for their first matchup early in conference play.
Senior Nandi Taylor led the way with 25 points. Senior Joy Hickman chipped in 17 points, while junior Endia McKinney tallied 15 points. Rounding out the double digit scoring a taking control of the Trojans recoveries was senior Taylor Daniels with 10 points and 14 rebounds.
Chowan was led by Mariah Coker with 15 points and Jordan Payne with 18 rebounds.
Tipping-off the quarter, both teams struggled to keep possession and secured a basket. After Chowan making the points of the game and taking a brief 6-3 lead, Nandi Taylor and McKinney helped move the Trojans ahead with consecutive shots from behind the arc. McKinney dominated the quarter grasping 12 of her 15 points to lift VSU over CU, 22-12.
Making a comeback in the second quarter, Chowan eased pass the Trojans, outscoring them 15-4. VSU trailed the Lady Hawks at the half, 27-26.
VSU did not leave any room for error in the third quarter as they reclaimed the lead. Securing 12 points in the quarter, Nandi Taylor help locked in the Trojans lead. Down to the final seconds of the game, the Lady Hawks attempted to bounce back. Keeping the home team at distance, the Trojan were able to claim the 75-62 win.
The Trojans were able to overpower the Lady Hawks in points off of turnovers (12-8).
VSU ended the matchup shooting 40.0 percent (22-55) from the field, 35.5 percent (11-31) from behind the arc, and 64.5 percent (20-31) at the line, while CU ended the game shooting 36.5 percent (23-63) from the field, 22.2 percent (4-18) from behind the arc, and 66.7 percent (12-18) at the line.
The Trojans will take on the Lady Vikings of Elizabeth City State University on February 11. Tip-off is set for 1pm at the VSU Multipurpose Center.
