Trojans Prepares For Road Contest Against Mansfield University

ETTRICK, Va. (December 5, 2017) – The Virginia State University women's basketball team will meet the Mountaineers of Mansfield University for the first time on Wednesday, Dec. 6, as the Trojans will look to continue its undefeated streak inside Marion Decker Gymnasium. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.

Virginia State enters Wednesday's game with a 7-0 mark on the year, remaining undefeated after its contest against Washington Adventist University (74-38) and Bluefield State College (79-29) last week.

During the Bluefield State College contest, Virginia State shot 37.8 percent from the field, 26.1 percent from behind the arc, 73.9 percent from the free throw line and had three players to score in double figures. Junior forward Chrisanna Green (Jamestown, NY) was VSU's second-leading scorer with 13 points and nine total rebounds, while guard Mia Fitts (Richmond, Va.) secured 12 points, one rebound, three assists and three steals.

Mansfield University enters the contest (3-5) falling to Mercyhurst (65-51). The Mountaineers held their only lead of the game in the first five minutes of play before Mercyhurst (4-5, 3-0 PSAC) caught up on a trey from Rachel Chessar. Taylor rocketed off a trifecta in response to tie up the game. The Lakers held a 17-11 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

Each team scored 16 points in the second to end the half 33-27 before Mansfield outscored Mercyhurst 14-13 in the third. The Mounties capitalized on the Lakers 14 turnovers as Kelly shot 8-15 from the floor. MU trialed 46-41 with 10 minutes left in the game.
