Box Score ETTRICK, Va. (December 2, 2017) — The Virginia State University women's basketball team had impressive defense when it held the Blues of Bluefield State College to single digit scoring in all quarters of the contest and to 15 total second-half points in a 79-29 victory this afternoon in the VSU Multipurpose Center.
Senior guard
Alexis Smith (Lusby, Md.) led the way for the Trojans in a game high triple double performance posting 16 points, three total rebounds, 10 assists and 10 steals.
Virginia State shot 37.8 percent from the field, 26.1 percent from behind the arc, 73.9 percent from the free throw line and had three players to score in double figures. Junior forward
Chrisanna Green (Jamestown, NY) was VSU's second-leading scorer with 13 points and nine total rebounds, while guard
Mia Fitts (Richmond, Va.) secured 12 points, one rebound, three assists and three steals.
Dionna Marcus and
Alexis Smith set the tone early contributing four points and fueling an 4-0 lead to start the game. Virginia State opened up a 20-6 lead to close out the first quarter, never trailing in the contest.
In the second stanza, Virginia State built their lead, 33-9, by the 6:28 mark, continuing to dominate on the court. The Trojans proceeded to add points to the board for the remainder of the half while tallying four points to take an extended advantage into the break, 37-14.
With 7:28 to go in the third, a 3-pointer by
Mia Fitts put Virginia State up, 44-17. Bluefield State College netted four points in the remaining minutes of the quarter, cutting Virginia State's lead to 62-21, heading into the final period.
The Trojans added 17 points in the final period to win the game, 79-29. VSU held the lead the whole contest.
Bluefield State College leading scorer was Lyric Hampton who finished the contest with eight points, two total rebounds, two assists and one steal.
Up Next: Virginia State will travel to face the Mountaineers of Mansfield University on Wednesday, December 6. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
