Box Score Fayetteville, NC (December 16, 2017) – Virginia State University's women basketball secured a 70-57 victory over the Broncos of Fayetteville State University this afternoon at Felton J. Capel Arena.
The Trojans have secured their second conference game victory to remain undefeated. The Trojans (11-0, 2-0 CIAA) utilized a 15-6 run in the second period of the contest to slide pass the Broncos of Fayetteville State University. With the loss the Broncos move to a 4-5 overall record, 0-2 in the CIAA.
Virginia State shot 36.4 percent from the field and 78.1 percent from the free throw line. Senior guard Mia Fitts (Richmond, Va.) followed Smith as VSU's second-leading scorer with 18 points, while guard Dionna Marcus (Fort Stewart, Ga.) and Chrisanna Green (Jamestown, NY) both finished with a double-double of ten (10) points and rebounds.
VSU entered the contest with intensity with FSU finishing the contest with 25 personal fouls. The Trojans set the tone early, fueling a 6-2 VSU lead in the opening minutes of the contest. Virginia State controlled the court with a 19-10 lead to close out the first quarter.
In the second stanza, Virginia State built their lead to 23-12 by the 8:04 mark, before the Broncos tried to mount a comeback and cut the lead to 30-16 with 1:55 to play in the half. VSU added 15 points in the half to take an 18 point advantage into the break, 34-16.
With 3:51 to go in the third, two free throw shots by Smith extended the Trojans lead, 46-33. FSU netted seven points in the final minutes of the quarter, to cut VSU lead 55-40 heading into the final period.
The Trojans added 15 points in the final period to win the game 70-57.
Fayetteville State was led in scoring by Yakima Clifton with 14 and Jamesha Mosley with 11.
Up Next: Virginia State will host Shepherd University on Saturday, December 30. The game is set to start at 2 p.m. at the VSU Multipurpose Center.
