Box Score 2 PEMBROKE, NC (November 4, 2017)- The Virginia State University volleyball team fell short in the University of North Carolina Pembroke Tri-Match on Saturday afternoon.
The Trojans faced the host UNC Pembroke for the first match of the event. VSU was not able to secure a set, falling 3-0.
VSU took on the St. Andrews Knights for their second match of the day. The Trojans put up a fight but could not take the game, with a final score of 3-1 (25-19, 24-26, 25-18, 25-16).
Junior Tiara Ramey controlled the court with 15 kills while rookie Jailyn Ivey stepped in with 13 kills. Alongside senior Miranda Bass' 42 assists, sophomore Jasmine Jones collected 20 digs.
Although the Knights secured the first few points of the opening set, the Trojans picked up their pace to tie the set and take the lead. St. Andrew's rallied back to tie the set 10-10, but VSU grasped six consecutive points to take the lead. The Knights managed to tie the set 19-19, but the Trojans mimicked their previous action, securing six consecutive points, ultimately taking the set, 25-19.
Collecting the first points of set two, the Trojans maintained an early lead over the Knights. After several SAU timeouts, the Knights managed to take the lead and secure four back to back points to take set two, 26-24.
Sets three and four looked similar as they ruled in favor of St. Andrews with a set score of 25-18 and 25-16.
The Trojans will be back in action for a 6pm conference match against Chowan University on November 6.
With the volleyball championship rapidly approaching the Trojans continue to work hard in preparation for championship play. The 2017 CIAA Volleyball Championship will take place on Nov. 17-19 at the VSU Multipurpose Center.
