Box Score ETTRICK, Va. (November 25, 2017) – Virginia State men's basketball fueled their way to an 94-55 victory over Newport News Apprentice School in their home season-opener this evening at the VSU Multipurpose Center. With the victory, the Trojans improve to a 5-0 record while the Builders of Newport News Apprentice School move to a 0-5 record.
The Trojans, scoring the opening basket of the game, dominated the first half of the contest building a 45-26 lead going into halftime. The Builders tried during the final 2:11 of the opening frame to cut the Trojans lead by adding six points.
Trey Brown led the way offensively for the Trojans in the half, shooting 4-for-6 from the field and 2-for-3 from 3-point range. Brown finished with 10 points and four rebounds.
The Trojans' lockdown defense continued into the second half, as they did not allow a point until the 17:55 mark. Andrew Corum hauled in 14 defensive rebounds in the winning effort.
Corum added 15 points and 17 total rebounds, and Walter Williams went for 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting while posting 11 rebounds of his own. Junior guard Brandon Holley (17), Richard Granberry (12) and Trey Brown (12) all ended the contest scoring in double digits.
Virginia State's offense remained consistent in the second half, as 13 players scored at least one point on the night. The Trojans added 49 points in the second half to win the game, shooting 54 percent for the night.
Romello Anderson led Apprentice School with 25 points, including one three-pointer, followed by Williams Wilcox and Drew Walton who both contributing seven points.
WITH THE WIN: The Trojans improved to a 5-0 record and remains undefeated in their home-opener at the VSU Multipurpose Center.
