Box Score ETTRICK, Va. (November 20, 2017) – The Virginia State University women's basketball team rolled to an 59-43 victory over Claflin University at the Multipurpose Center tonight, with senior guard Mia Fitts posting 17 points, two rebounds, one assist and three steals to lead the way for the Trojans.
Virginia State shot 55 percent from the field, 38 percent from behind the arc and had two players to score in double figures. Senior guard Keyana Brown was VSU's second-leading scorer with 13 points, while guard Alexis Smith secured 10 points. Defensively the Trojans was led by Chrisanna Green who secured 13 rebounds.
Fitts set the tone early contributing nine points and fueling a 9-4 lead to start the game. Virginia State opened up a 17-6 lead to close out the first quarter, never trailing in the contest.
In the second stanza, Virginia State built its lead to 20-7 by the 7:59 mark, continuing to dominate on the court. The Trojans proceeded to add points to the board for the remainder of the half while tallying 10 points to take a 9-point advantage into the break, 30-21.
With 7:53 to go in the third, a jumper by Mia Fitts put Virginia State up 38-21. Claflin netted eight points in the final minutes of the quarter, cutting Virginia State's lead to 49-29, heading into the final period.
The Trojans added 10 points in the final period to win the game 59-43.
Claflin was led in scoring by Ashley Fields with 20 and Jhanice Stokes with 10.
