Box Score ETTRICK, VA (October 9, 2017)- The Virginia State University Trojan volleyball team came out victorious in the Battle of the Orange and Blue, with a 3-1 (25-18, 25-16, 20-25, 25-19) win over the Lions of Lincoln University (PA).
Sophomore Kennedi Cannon led VSU with 12 kills, followed by rookie Jailyn Ivey with 11 kills. Sophomore Jasmine Jones collected 4 aces, while senior Miranda Bass tallied 37 assists, 20 assists shy of her 2000th career assist.
There was a battle for the lead in set one, as the teams went point for point. After tying the game 9 times in set one, the Trojans jumped ahead with 5 consecutive points, taking the 19-15 lead. VSU stayed focused and pulled away with the 25-18 set one win.
The Trojans had no mercy in set two, taking an early 10-2 lead. The Lions attempted to rally back and take advantage of a few Trojan errors. Despite the Lions efforts, VSU grasped the 25-16 set two victory.
Set three ruled in favor of Lincoln, as they held the lead for majority of the set to take the 25-20 win.
Set four was intense, as the arena of cheering Trojan fans kept the teams momentum high. After battling for the lead, the Trojans secured 6 consecutive points to take the 17-10 lead. Play for play, the crowd was engaged as Jailyn Ivey record 4 powerful kills to end set four in favor of VSU, 25-19, giving the Trojans the overall win.
The victory moves the Trojans to a 5-4 CIAA record, 5-13 overall.
VSU will face the Bulldogs of Bowie State University on October 12 for the Trojans Think Pink Breast Cancer Awareness game. The first serve is set for 6pm at the VSU Multipurpose Center.
