Box Score LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. (October 30, 2017)- The Virginia State University Trojan volleyball team came out victorious in the Battle of the Orange and Blue, with a 3-0 win over the Lions of Lincoln University (Pa.) on Monday in Manuel Rivero Hall. Virginia State won by the scores of 25-21, 25-15 and 25-11.
Juniors Hailey Heyward and Tiara Ramey led the way for VSU with nine kills each, followed by Myia Jones with eight kills. Rookie Jailyn Ivey collected three aces, while senior Miranda Bass tallied 33 assists.
Opening set one both teams battled to take the lead. Three consecutive errors by VSU gave the Lions a 10-7 lead. After a timeout by the Trojans they secured five back to back points taking a 12-10 lead. Lincoln continued to rally which tied the game several times. A kill by junior Hailey Heyward put VSU back in the game to take a 21-18 lead. Despite Lincoln's attempt to close the scoring gap, VSU pulled away with a 25-15 set one win.
Bringing the same momentum into set two the Trojans secured an early 10-2 lead. The Lions then attempted to close the scoring gap by capitalizing on a few Trojan errors. Despite the Lions effort, VSU grasped the 25-16 set two victory.
In set three, Virginia State only allowed the Lions to reach a little over 10 points. VSU pulled away early in the set with eight consecutive points, collecting an 11-4 lead. The Trojans controlled the court for the remainder of the set, sliding to an 25-11 win.
The victory moves the Trojans to a 9-4 CIAA record, 9-13 overall while securing a five-game winning streak. With the loss, the Lions moves to 2-13 in the conference.
The 2017 CIAA Volleyball Championship will take place on Nov. 17-19 at the VSU Multipurpose Center. With the volleyball championship rapidly approaching the Trojans continue to work hard in preparation for championship play.
