Ettrick, Va. (October 26, 2017)- The Virginia State University Men's Cross Country team secured the 2017 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Men's Cross Country Championship Title under the direction of Head Coach
Wilbert Johnson on Oct. 26 in Salem, VA.
The Trojans captured the tile with a team score of 39 points. Standout Sophomore
Tyreece Huff (Washington, D.C.) was the top Trojan finisher, clocking a time of 27:59.9 on the 8K course. Huff's stellar performance this season also earned him the honor of CIAA Men's Runner of the Year. Freshman
Nickolas Stackfield (Norfolk, Va.) managed a time of 29:23.6, placing 6
th in the field of 76 runners. Coming in eighth place was senior
Juma Mouchette (Sandys, Bermuda) with a final time of 29:39.4. Sophomore
Steven Murdock (Bryant, AK) came in the tenth spot with a time of 29:43.6.
Tyron Evans (Highland Springs, Va.) finished in 12
th place with a time of 29:52.3, while freshman
Charles Salley (Midlothian, Va.) finished in the 25
th spot with a time of 30:55.3. Rounding things out for the Trojans was
Louis Andrews, who placed 39
th for the Trojans with a final time of 32:31.3.
A first place finish deserves a Coach of the Year title as well! This is the fourth season in a row that Head Coach
Wilbert Johnson has been named the CIAA Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year. The last three were while Coach Johnson was at Virginia Union University.
"It feels wonderful that we won the 2017 CIAA Cross Country Championship that has eluded VSU Men's Cross Country since 2008," said head coach
Wilbert Johnson. "Our guys endured the 5:30 a.m. practices all season long that led them to be true soldiers. They delivered and conquered the Championship in a domination fashion."
Next, the Trojans are looking to head to the NCAA Atlantic Region Championships in Slippery Rock, Pa. on November 4
th.
