Volleyball Takes Down ECSU in 3 Sets

ELIZABETH CITY, NC (October 22, 2017)- In a quick weekend matchup, the Virginia State University volleyball team took down the Lady Vikings of Elizabeth City State University in three sets (25-11, 25-22, 25-16) on the road.

Rookie Jailyn Ivey controlled the court for the contest with 14 total kills. Sophomore Kennedi Cannon and the return of junior Tiara Ramey, added seven kills each to the Trojans scorebook. Rookie Victoria Holman collected four aces while senior Miranda Bass stepped in with 33 assists.

The beginning of set one looked as if the Lady Vikings were going to put up an early fight, tying the score 6-6. A kill by Ivey soon jumpstarted the Trojans extended lead. Kill for kill and ECSU errors gave VSU a 20-10 lead over the home team. Only allowing the Lady Vikings one additional point, the Trojans grasped the 25-11 set one victory.

The scoring gap was extremely close in set two as the Trojans fought to keep the Lady Vikings in the dust. Going play for play, the score was tied five times before the teams got halfway through the set. A service error by ECSU gave the Trojans a boost to gain four consecutive points. The Lady Vikings answered back with three back to back points, bringing the score to 21-19, in favor of VSU. Despite a few Trojan errors, VSU was able to stand strong and take the 25-22 set two win.

VSU undoubtedly owned set three with seven consecutive points to start. The Lady Vikings slowly attempted to close the scoring gap, but the Trojans held a 16-12 lead after a kill by Ivey. VSU powered through the remainder of the set to take the 25-16 victory and the overall match.

The victory moves the Trojans to an 8-4 CIAA record, 8-13 overall.

VSU will travel up the road on October 30 to take on the Lions of Lincoln University. The first serve is set for 6pm.
