Women's Basketball Outlast Lincoln, 53-52

Ettrick, VA- The Virginia State University women's basketball team outlasted the Lions of Lincoln University 53-52 on January 28.

The Trojans improve to 14-6 overall record 6-4 in the conference.

Endia McKinney led the charge for the Trojans offensively recording 15 points. Mia Fitts followed up for the Trojans contributing 14 points. Senior Taylor Daniels led the defensive effort for VSU securing 12 rebounds.

The Lions were offensively led by She'cquan Bailey who recorded 14 points. Tiera Pendleton secured nine rebounds for the Lions.

McKinney opened up the game knocking down a shot from three point land to put the Trojans on the scoreboard. Moments later McKinney was able to show her effectiveness on both ends for the Trojans scoring back to back baskets to give VSU an early 10-5 lead over the Lions.

LU ended the first quarter on an 8-2 run taking a 13-12 lead over VSU into the second quarter. The Trojans struggled in the second quarter and were held to only seven points. The Lions entered halftime with a 32-19 lead after going on a 17-3 run to end the opening half.

The Trojans managed to fight their way back into the contest after McKinney knocked down two consecutive three pointers midway through the third quarter to revive the Trojans. On the next LU inbounds pass, Joy Hickman came away with the ball and scored a quick basket to highlight an 8-0 VSU run. VSU outscored LU 23-9 in the third quarter overcoming a 13 point deficit to take the lead (42-41)

Both teams exchanged baskets in the fourth quarter, but with 3 seconds remaining on the game clock Nandi Taylor's layup gave the Trojans a 53-52 lead to clinch the victory.

VSU ended the night shooting 30% (18-60) from the field, 22.6% (7-31) from behind the arc, and 71.4% (10-14) at the line, while LU ended the game shooting 34.8% (16-46) from the field, 33.3% (4-12) from behind the arc, and 55.2% (16-29) at the line.

VSU will continue to work hard to prepare for the 2017 CIAA Basketball Tournament on February 20-25 in Charlotte. NC.
