Women’s Basketball Survives Bowie State, 46-43

Box Score

BOWIE, MD- The Virginia State University women's basketball team survived the Bowie State University Lady Bulldogs on January 25 with a close score of 46-43.

The win advanced the Trojans to a 13-6 overall record, 5-4 in the conference, while the Lady Bulldogs are setback to a 15-5 overall record, 7-3 in the CIAA

Junior Endia McKinney controlled the Trojans and the overall game with 15 points, while senior Nandi Taylor was not too far behind with 14 points. Senior Taylor Daniels took charge of VSU's recoveries with 13 rebounds.

BSU was led by Kyaja Williams with 10 points and Ashley Jennings with 14 rebounds.

Daniels started the game off with a layup, but the Trojans lead was short lived. The Lady Bulldogs stepped in taking control of the quarter, but VSU worked to keep the scoring margin low. The Trojans hard work paid off as junior Mia Fitts landed shot from behind the arc to tie the first quarter 10-all.

Fighting to stay alive in the game, the Trojans kept the scoring gap low with the necessary shots to include a 3-pointer from McKinney. VSU entered halftime, trailing 21-17.

Although the third quarter mimicked the second, VSU came out determined to take the win in the fourth quarter. Nandi Taylor was a major player for the Trojans, helping them take the lead. A foul on the Lady Bulldogs sent Taylor to the line to secure 2 good baskets. McKinney gave the Trojans an extra boost with a shot from behind the arc, to give VSU the 44-41 lead. With under one minute left in regulation, the Trojans fought to keep BSU at a distance. A jumper from Nandi Taylor would be the finish shot of the game to give the Trojans the 46-43 win.

VSU ended the matchup shooting 30.0 percent (18-60) from the field, 32.0 percent (8-25) from behind the arc, and 50.0 percent (2-4) at the line, while BSU ended the game shooting 28.8 percent (17-59) from the field, 12.5 percent (1-8) from behind the arc, and 57.1 percent (8-14) at the line.

The Trojans will take on the Lady Lions of Lincoln University on January 28.  Tip-off is set for 2pm at the VSU Multipurpose Center.

VSU will continue to work hard to prepare for the 2017 CIAA Basketball Tournament on February 20-25 in Charlotte. NC.
