Box Score 2 ETTRICK, Va.- The Virginia State University Trojan volleyball team did a quick clean up on September 3 with two 3-set sweeps for their season opener. The tournament collaboration of Virginia State and Virginia Union played season opener host to St. Augustine's, Pfeiffer and Methodist.
Guiding a solid squad, head Coach Rose White entered Day 1 of the tournament with standout student- athletes to include CIAA Preseason picks sophomore
Tiara Ramey and senior Deidre Carter.
The Trojans conquered Pfeiffer for VSU's first official volleyball game in the Multipurpose Center. Ramey led the Trojans with 6 kills while Carter and senior
Alexsys Pullen secured 5 kills each. Senior
Adriana Hazou tallied 5 aces while team out blocked the Pfeiffer Falcon with 6 blocks, 3 of which were secured my sophomore Maya Jones.
VSU did not hesitate in taking control over set 1 with a 25-5 win. The Falcons attempted to jump back in to game, but VSU went on to dominate set 2 with a score of 25-18 and set 3 with a final score of 25-16.
Working a little harder in game 2 over the Methodist Marchoins, VSU rounded out the day with a 3-0 (25-21, 27-25, 25-21) victory. Pullen and sophomore
Sydney Uko each had a great game leading the Trojans with 9 kills each. Sophomore
Myia Jones was not too far behind with 6 kills. The Trojans had 7 total aces during the game, 4 of which were secured from sophomore
Hailey Heyward.
VSU had another great game at the net, tallying another 6 blocks for the tournament, 3 of which were secured my sophomore Maya Jones.
The Trojans will take on St. Augustine's for Day 2 of the Tournament on the campus of Virginia Union. The first serve is set for 11am.
