Box Score 3 MURFREESBORO, NC- The Virginia State University volleyball team wrapped up the first CIAA Round Up of the season on September 17-18 with a 2-1 record. After falling short to Shaw but taking down St. Augustine's and Fayetteville State, the Trojans have an overall season record of 6-4.
On Saturday, the Trojans faced off against the Shaw Bears, falling short with a score of 3-1. The Bears dominated the first two sets with a score of 25-19 and 25-16. VSU put up a fight in set three, keeping the score tied. The Trojans pulled away from the 17-17 tie, with sophomore
Tiara Ramey lifting the team to the 25-20 set 3 win. VSU worked to put up the same fight in set four, but lost 25-22 after a few errors.
Senior
Dierdre Carter led the Trojans with 11 kills while senior
Alexsys Pullen and sophomore Miya Jones each collected 8 kills. Jones guarded the net, collecting 5 blocks as Pullen helped out the team with 20 assists.
The Trojans bounce back in game 2 with a 3-0 victory over the St. Augustine's Falcons. Quickly snatching the 3 sets (25-21, 25-13, 25-22), the Trojans were led by Pullen, who secured 9 kills. Ramey was not too far behind with 8 kills followed by sophomore
Hailey Heyward with 5. Heyward and freshman Terriane White dominated the net with 6 blocks while Jones collected 5 blocks. Junior
Miranda Bass led the Trojans with 16 assists while senior
Adriana Hazou tallied 21 digs.
Day 2 of the CIAA Roundup worked in the Trojans favor as they took a 3 set win (25-15, 25-21, 25-23) over the Fayetteville State Lady Broncos.
Heyward and Ramey led VSU with 9 kills each, while Carter collected 6. Pullen stepped in with 14 assists as Hazou stayed consistent tallying 17 digs.
VSU will travel to Bowie, MD on Thursday, September 22 to take on the Bulldogs of Bowie State. The first serve is set for 6pm.
