Box Score 2 RALIEGH, NC- The Virginia State University baseball team split duel with the St. Augustine's University Falcons on April 9.
The Trojans fell short of a win in game 1 with a final score of 4-3.
Securing a run for VSU were sophomore
Rodney Shell (Dinwiddie, VA), senior
Tashaun Taylor (Richmond, VA), and junior
Julian White (Yorktown, VA).
At the top of the first inning, Shell was able to advance home despite a double play with the bases loaded.
VSU would remain scoreless in innings 2-4, as the Falcons jumps ahead with 4 runs. At the top of the 5
th inning, Taylor and White advanced home while the Trojans kept SAU down at the bottom of the same. Both teams were unable to secure a run in the final 2 innings, giving VSU the 4-3 loss.
The Trojans jumped ahead in game 2, taking the 7-2 win.
Visiting home plate once for VSU were Taylor, Shell, and sophomore
Chris Carter (Ruther Glen, VA). Running home twice for the Trojans were White and junior
David Markins (Colonial Heights, VA).
SAU started the game off with 2 runs at the bottom of the 1
st inning, but VSU would come back strong at the top of the 3
rd. Capitalizing on consecutive plays, the Trojans brought home 5 runners after several advancements due to errors and passed balls by the Falcons. As both teams remained scoreless in the 4
th inning, as the Trojans held the 5-2 lead. At the top of the 5
th inning, White advanced home, while a single to left field by senior
Jamison Griffin (Newport News, VA), gave Markins the space secure a run. VSU held the 7-2 lead to the end of the 7
th inning, earning the win.
Collecting his 3
rd win of the season on the mound for the Trojans is rookie
Jordan Claytor (Dinwiddie, VA).
The Trojans will meet the Falcons on the field in Raleigh, NC for Day 2 of their matchup on April 10. The first pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1pm.
