Box Score 2 ETTRICK, Va.- The VSU Trojans baseball team split with the Winston-Salem State University Rams (4-3, 5-2) for day 2 of their doubleheader weekend matchup on April 3.
Putting the Trojans on the board in game one were sophomore
Rodney Shell ( Dinwiddie, VA), rookie
Aaron Harris (Atlanta, GA), senior
Tashaun Taylor (Richmond, VA), and senior
David Markins (Colonial Heights).
Both teams were consistent in the first 2 innings, holding each other down in runs. At the top of the 3
rd inning, the Rams were able to advance home on a wild pitch. Rotating to the top of the lineup, Shell started the Trojans off with a double at the bottom of the 3
rd inning. He would ultimately advance home, tying the game 1-1.
VSU kicked their game into high gear, securing 2 runs in the bottom of the 4
th inning and a single at the bottom of the 5
th. After a scoreless 6
th inning, the Trojans held a 4-1 lead. The Rams attempted to take the lead, collecting 2 runs at the top of the 7
th inning, but a ground out to the catcher on an attempt to score gave WSSU their third out. VSU took the 4-3 win in game 1.
Game 2 was very intense as the teams and fans anticipated a great contest.
Seniors
Johnny Rowe (Petersburg, VA) and
Tashaun Taylor put the Trojans on the board for game 2.
WSSU clinched a run at the top of the 1
st and 2
nd inning, while the 3
rd inning end quickly for both teams. Despite two outs on the board at the bottom of the 4
th inning, a double by Rowe would soon advance him home. A scoreless 5
th inning seemed to work in favor of the Rams as they landed 3 runs at the top of the 6
th, bringing the score to 5-1. The Trojans gave the Rams 3 quick outs at the top of the 7
th, but were only able to grasp a single run to take a 5-2 loss.
The Trojans will be back in action on April 6 in Durham, NC to take on the Eagles on North Carolina Central for a single 9 inning game. The first pitch is set for 6pm.
