CARY, NC- The Virginia State University baseball team fell short to Winston-Salem State University and Chowan University during the 2016 CIAA Championships on April 28.
In the first game of the day, the Trojans fell to the Rams 6-2.
Going into the 4
th inning, the Trojans trailed by 1 run. Rookie
Aaron Harris (Atlanta, GA) and junior
David Markins (Colonial Heights, VA) were able to capitalize on a walk and advanced home to take the lead at the top of the 4
th.
WSSU bounced back with a single run to tie the game 2-2 going into the 5
th inning. They would later gain 4 additional runs, giving VSU the 6-2 fall.
VSU faced the Hawks of Chowan University in the Consolation Round.
The Hawks jumped ahead with 4 runs at the top of the 1
st inning and gained an additional at the top of the 2
nd. Senior
Jamison Griffin (Newport News, VA) and junior
Julian White (Yorktown, VA) were able to advance home at the bottom of the 2
nd after senior
Tashaun Taylor (Richmond, VA) hit a double to left field.
Senior
Stephen Brown (McBee, SC) gave VSU their final run of the game at the bottom of the 5
th inning bring the score to 7-3. Chowan gain 7 additional runs to give VSU the 14-3 loss.
The Trojans wrap up their season with a 8-31 overall record.
This season the team had 6 student-athletes on the All-CIAA conference team to include the Rookie of the Year
