Box Score 2 ETTRICK, Va.- The Virginia State University baseball team claimed a duel win over the Lincoln University Lions on April 17 for day 2 of their double doubleheader matchup.
This weekend marked the Trojans longest winning streak with 4 consecutive games.
VSU took an 8-6 in the first game of the day over the Lions.
Sophomore
Rodney Shell (Dinwiddie, VA), rookie
Aaron Harris (Atlanta, GA) and senior
Jamison Griffin (Newport News, VA) each collected 2 runs. Senior
David Markins (Colonial Heights, VA) and sophomore
Chris Carter (Ruther Glen, VA) came in with a single run.
The Trojans took control of the game early with a 6-2 led over the Lions at the bottom of the 3
rd inning. Each team collected a single run in the 4
th inning and were scoreless in the 5
th. Going into the 6
th inning with a score of 7-3, the Lions attempted to rally back by gaining 3 runs. VSU shut Lincoln down by gaining a single run in the same inning. The Trojans stood strong taking the 8-6 win.
Game 2 ended with the Trojans taking the 6-3 win.
Senior
Corey Grant (Dinwiddie, VA) led the Trojans with 2 runs while Markins secured a homerun. Also advancing home with a single run were Griffin, Carter and junior
Julian White (Yorktown, VA).
The Trojans seemed to have a slow start to game 2, trailing 3-0 at the bottom of the 3
rd inning. The team gained momentum tying the game 3-3 at the end of the 4
th inning. After Markins smacking a homer in the 5
th inning, VSU collected 2 additional runs in the 6
th inning to take the 6-3 lead and eventually the win.
VSU will return to the Whaley Colbert Field on Friday, April 22 to take on the Builders of the Newport News Apprentice School for the Trojans Senior Day doubleheader matchup. The first pitch is set for 1pm.
