Box Score 2 ETTRICK, Va.- The Virginia State University baseball team defeated the Lions of Lincoln University (7-6, 5-3) in their day 1 doubleheader on April 16 at the Whaley Colbert Field.
In game 1, sophomore
Rodney Shell (Dinwiddie, VA) led the Trojans with 2 runs. Following through with a single run were rookie
Aaron Harris (Atlanta, GA), senior
Jamison Griffin (Newport News, VA), senior
Tashaun Taylor (Richmond, VA), senior
Corey Grant (Dinwiddie, VA) and sophomore
Daniel Cross (Chesapeake, VA).
VSU secured 2 runs at the bottom of the 1
st inning, but the Lions answered back with a single at the top of the 2
nd. Taking charge of the game, the Trojans tallied 3 additional runs at the bottom of the 2
nd inning. Despite no added runs in the 3
rd inning for VSU, the team maintained a 5-2 lead.
At the start of the 6
th inning, the Trojans held a 6-3 lead. The Lions rallied back, tying the game 6-6. The Trojans broke free of the tie and claimed the win at the bottom of the 7
th inning with a single run.
Taylor led the Trojans in game 2 after hitting 2 triples, resulting in 2 home plate advancements. Also running home for VSU were, Griffin, senior
David Markins (Colonial Heights, VA) and junior
Julian White (Yorktown, VA).
VSU stayed consistent, gaining runs in the 2
nd, 4
th and 6
th innings. The Lions were only able to collect 2 runs in the 3
rd inning, while the Trojans stopped them in their tracks in the 7
th inning with 1 run. The Trojans grasp the 5-3 win for game 2.
VSU will return to the Whaley Colbert Field on Sunday, April 17 to take on the Lions of Lincoln University for their day 2 doubleheader matchup. The first pitch is set for 1pm.
