Box Score 2 HAMPTON, Va. – The Virginia State University baseball team dropped to the Newport News Apprentice School Builders (4-2, 5-2) in a doubleheader matchup on April 15.
Advancing the Trojans home in game 1 were senior
David Markins (Colonial Heights, VA) and sophomore
Larry Green (Ruther Glen, VA).
VSU trailed the Builders 2-0 through the bottom of the 3
rd inning. At the top of the 4
th, Markins put the Trojans on the board after a sacrifice fly out by senior
Tashaun Taylor (Richmond, VA). Green reached home plate at the top of the 5
th inning, tying the game 2-2. The Apprentice School collected 2 runs at the bottom of the 5
th inning. The teams remained scoreless for the remainder of the game, giving VSU the 4-2 loss.
The first inning of game 2 mimicked the previous game, with the Trojans trailing 2-0. A double by Green at the top of the 2
nd inning, advanced Taylor home, bringing the score 2-1. Neither team scored in the 3
rd and 4
th inning, but Green mirrored game 1, advancing home at the top of the 5
th and tying the game 2-2. The Builders collected 3 runs at the bottom of the same, ultimately taking the 5-2 lead and the game.
The Trojans will be back in action on April 16 -17 for a conference double doubleheader against Lincoln University. The first pitch on both days is set for 1pm at the VSU Whaley Colbert Field.
