Box Score 2 Ettrick, Va.- The Virginia State University Trojans baseball team split a double-header game against the Mercy College Mavericks (10-1, 7-6) on March 5, to earn their first win of the season.
The Trojans currently hold a 1-9 overall record.
In game 1, junior
Julian White (Yorktown, VA) gave the Trojans their only run of the game at the bottom of the 2
nd inning.
VSU was able to work together in game 2 to take the win.
The Trojans were able to make contact with the ball earning 10 hits to Mercy's 8 hits. Seniors
Stephen Brown (McBee, SC) and
Johnny Rowe (Petersburg, VA) led the team with 2 RBI's each. Â Putting the Trojans on the board with 2 runs was junior
David Markins (Colonial Heights, VA). Running in for a single were rookie
Rodney Shell (Dinwiddie, VA ), senior
Corey Grant (Dinwiddie, VA), junior
Tashaun Taylor (Richmond, VA), sophomore
Devin Walker (Portsmouth, VA) and
Stephen Brown.
Keeping the Marvericks down for majority of the game, the Trojans were up 5-2 going into the 7
th inning. Mercy was able to steal home and hit a homer bringing in 2 runners to tie the game.
VSU kept hope alive despite the Mavericks securing another homerun at the top of the 8
th inning. Markins ran in bring the score to 6-6. With first and second base loaded, rookie
Aaron Harris (Atlanta, GA) secured a double bringing home
Devin Walker for the 7-6 win.
VSU will face the Mavericks for a single 9 inning game on Sunday, March 6.
