ETTRICK, Va.- The Virginia State University baseball team will open up their 2016 season with a double-header on Sunday, February 7 at the Whaley Colbert Field. The Trojans will host UVA-Wise at 12 PM.
Three Trojans were named to the pre season All-CIAA team; Catcher #1
David Markins, Utility #22
Corey Grant, Outfielder #2
Tashaun Taylor.
Last season the Trojans competed for the CIAA Championship title and suffered a 8-3 loss to Winston-Salem State University.
VSU baseball finished the season with a 25-18 overall record and 9-9 in the conference.
The Trojans lost a lot of talented athletes with the departure of six graduating seniors from last years roster. Coach Morgan has acquired five 2015-16 recruits this offseason;
Aaron Harris, Matthew Issac, Rodney "O'Neal" Shell, Larry Stephens Jr, and Jacob (Dylan) Wells.
"We will need returners
David Markins,
Tashaun Taylor,
Jamison Griffin, and
Corey Grant to have a big year for the Trojans to be successful," said Head Coach
Merrill Morgan. "Talented freshman Larry Stephens and
Aaron Harris along with transfer
Julian White could make an impact very early. These guys will have to fill some big shoes in Nick Christopher, Josh Markins,
Tyler Coleman and Zach Jordan. This group was outstanding and will be very hard to replace."
The Trojans anticipate on winning baseball games and competing hard to make it back to the CIAA Championship and have another shot at the title.
