Box Score ETTRICK, Va.- The Virginia State University women's basketball team moved to an 8-2 overall record after falling to the Griffins of Seton Hill University. The final score of the December 16 matchup was 59-47.
Coming off the bench, junior Endia McKinney led the Trojans in scoring with 14 points. Senior Joy Hickman rounded out the double-digit scoring and led VSU in recoveries with 11 points and 9 rebounds.
The Trojans had a slow run for most of the contest as they worked to find a rhythm. The Griffins had an up temp system as they relied on their starters for most of the game.
After the first 2 quarters, VSU entered halftime trailing with a score of 31-17.
Gaining momentum in the third quarter, the Trojans were able to chip away at the scoring gap. Grasping most of their points from the line, VSU was equally matched with SHU in the quarter; with each team securing 14 points.
Despite strong efforts in the final minutes and leading the quarter in scoring (16-14), VSU took their second loss of the season.
The Trojans had an edge on the Griffins in bench points (38-15) and points off of turnovers (9-2).
VSU ended the night shooting 22.7 percent (15-66) from the field, 27.3 percent (6-22) from behind the arc, and 68.8 percent (11-16) at the line, while SHU ended the night shooting 40.7 percent (22-54) from the field, 42.9 percent (9-21) from behind the arc, and 54.5 percent (6-11) at the line.
The Trojans will take on the Lady Falcons of St. Augustine's University on Sunday, December 18. Tip-off is set for 2:30pm at the VSU Multipurpose Center.
VSU will continue to work hard to prepare for the 2017 CIAA Basketball Tournament on February 20-25 in Charlotte. NC.
