Women’s Basketball Secures 69-60 Win to Round Out Thanksgiving Classic

Box Score ETTRICK, Va.- The Virginia State University women's basketball team rounded out the 2016 VSU Trojans Thanksgiving Classic with a 69-60 win over the Wildcats of Wilmington University.
The Trojans move to a 4-1 record after this weekend classic.

Tallying a single game career high was junior Endia McKinney with 18 points. McKinney also led VSU with 8 rebounds. Junior Mia Fitts chipped in 15 points while senior Nandi Taylor rounded out the double digit scoring with 14 points.

The outstanding performance from McKinney earned her a place on the Thanksgiving Classic Tournament team, along with Taylor who was also named tournament MVP.

Both teams had a slow start to the game, each only scoring 5 points with 5:36 left in the first quarter. Following the media timeout. the teams gained momentum, with the Trojans jumping ahead with a 16-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.

McKinney secured the first bucket of the second quarter, but the Wildcats would quickly close the scoring gap before the second media timeout of the half. With the score 22-21, the Trojans visited the foul line to 3 consecutive times to help move them ahead. A layup and single foul shot by Fitts gave the Trojans a double digit lead, 35-25, going into half time.

The Wildcats had no hesitation, stating the third quarter off with a shot from behind the arc. VSU worked to keep the visiting team at a distance, but they slowly crept back, trailing with a score of 46-44, with 1:55 left in the quarter. The Trojans worked together, capitalizing off of a Wildcats turnover to secure a 3 point shot to end the third quarter.

Playing like a true MVP, McKinney landed a 3 pointer to open the final quarter of the contest. The Trojans worked to hold Wilmington down and answered back with much needed shots to hold the lead. Nandi Taylor gave the Trojans their final 2 buckets of the contest for the 69-60 win.

VSU ended the night shooting 36.2 percent (21-58) from the field, 47.1 percent (8-17) from behind the arc, and 65.5 percent (19-29) at the line, while the Wildcats ended the night shooting 47.7 percent (21-44) from the field, 42.9 percent (3-7) from behind the arc, and 68.2 percent (15-22) at the line.

The Trojans will return to the court on Monday, November 28 to face the Fire Birds of University of the District of Columbia. Tip-off is set for 5:30pm.
