Volleyball Falls to Shaw in CIAA Semifinals

Box Score ETTRICK, VA- The Virginia State University volleyball team fell to the Shaw University Bears, 3-1 in the 2016 CIAA Championship Semifinals on November 19.

Sophomore Tiara Ramey notched 14 kills in the setback with sophomore Haley Heyward adding 10 kills for Virginia State. Senior Alexsys Pullen tallied 22 assists with junior Miranda Bass notching 21 assists.  Senior Adriana Hazou grabbed 25 digs for the Trojans with Ramey and rookie Jasmine Jones both notching 15 digs apiece. 

The Trojans had a close setback in sets 1 and 2 against Shaw. The opening set had a final score of 26-24 while set 2 ended with a score of 28-26, both in favor of the Bears.  VSU regrouped to take a 25-15 win in the third set but dropped a 26-24 decision in the fourth set. 

The opening set featured a fierce battle for control of the momentum.  The Lady Bears and Trojans matched each other point-for-point through the duration. With the score knotted 24-24, a Trojan attack error and kill by Jones handed Shaw the 26-24 win in set one. 

Virginia State jumped to a 16-9 lead in the second set.  The Lady Bears fought to stay within striking distance and managed to battle back and tie the set 18-18.  After an all-out battle down the final stretch of the second set, a Virginia State attack error and kill by Nautica Vega secured the a 28-26 win for the Lady Bears.

In the third set, Virginia State raced to a 6-2 lead before building a 16-9 advantage by the midway point.  The Trojans clung to the lead for the remainder of the set and secured the 25-15 win using Hazou's service ace. 

In the fourth set, the Trojans once again came out with an early advantage.  With VSU holding a narrow 16-12 lead, the Lady Bears battled back to knot the score 16-16.  VSU and Shaw exchanged points down the final stretch of set four before the Lady Bears captured the 26-24 win with a kill by Jones and a service ace. 

The Trojans ended their season with a 19-10 overall record.
