Box Score 2 ATHENS, WV- The VSU Trojans volleyball team split the weekend, 1-1, at the Triangular Matchup hosted by Concord University. The Trojans fall to the host in a 3-2 game 1 matchup, but secured a 3-0 win over the Bluefield State Blues in game 2.
Sophomores
Hailey Heyward and
Tiara Ramey each tallied 15 kills in the 3-2 (18-25, 25-20, 14-25, 25-22, 11-15) contest against the host Concord University.
After the first point of the set by the Trojans, the team trail for the remainder of the set taking the 25-18 loss. VSU found their rhythm in set 2 capitalizing off of errors and kills to gain the 25-20 victory. VSU errors held the team down in set 3. Only securing 14 points, the Trojans had to work hard in the following set to stay alive.
VSU trailed for majority of set 4, until back to back kills, an error and an ace gave the Trojans the much need edge to take the 21-20 lead. VSU took charge, grasping the final points of the set for the 25-22 win. The scoring margin was close in the deciding set. A combination of 5 consecutive kills and errors put the Trojans at a disadvantage, ultimately costing them the 15-11 set 5 win and the match.
The team redeemed themselves in the following matchup with a 3-0 victory.
In the quick sweep over Bluefield State, sophomore Haley Heyward led the Trojans and the game with 9 kills. Fellow teammate sophomore
Tiara Ramey was close behind with 8 kills.
The Trojans did not give the Blues a chance to reach 20 points in sets 1 (25-18) and 2 (25-10). Attempting to rally back in set 3, Bluefield State toggled for the lead. Errors and kills help lift the Trojans to the 25-21 set win and the match win.
The Trojans will return home on October 31 for the team's final 2016 home game of the regular  season. VSU will recognize the 6pm game against the Lincoln Lions as Senior Day.
