Box Score BOWIE, Md.- Virginia State University football took a 38-37 loss to Bowie State University on October 15 at Bulldogs Stadium.
The Trojans finished the game with 415 total yards of offense over Bowie State's 385 yards, but could not take advantage on the scoreboard, falling to a 5-2 overall record (2-2 CIAA). Bowie State improves to 5-2 overall (4-0 CIAA).
BSU took the early 6-0 lead with 9:20 on the game clock with a completed pass to Nyme Manns. VSU answered back with a 2 yard rush for a touchdown by senior running back
Kavon Bellamy.
Junior running back
Trenton Cannon was strong for the Trojans, leading them offensively with 138 yards rushing on 19 carries and scored two touchdowns. Cannon's strength on the field carried him into his first career 100 yard game. Bellamy contributed 104 rushing yards on 19 touches and two touchdowns as well.
Senior kicker, Matthew Hillquist, nailed a 29 yard field goal to give the Trojans a 24-20 lead over Bowie State going into the half.
VSU started the third quarter with one goal in mind; visit the end zone. Senior quarterback Tarian Ayers completed two passes for touchdowns to create a 17 point gap in favor of the Trojans.
Defensively the Trojans stepped up and shined early in the game. Junior linebacker
Brandon Lynch made his presence known and tallied 9 tackles (7 solo) and 2.5 sacks for a loss of 16 yards, dominating the defensive end for the Trojans. Lynch leads the Trojans with 33 total solo tackles on the season. Senior linebacker
Geo Feggins finished the game with 7 tackles (6 solo).
In a turn of events, BSU scored 18 unanswered points in the second half to clinch the one point victory over the Trojan.
The Trojans will return home to host the Lions of Lincoln University, next Saturday for the annual Homecoming game. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. inside Rogers Stadium.
