Box Score 2 WINSTON-SALEM, NC- The Virginia State University volleyball team fought hard on Day 1 of the CIAA Round-Up, hosted by Winston-Salem State University. The Trojans split the event with a 3-2 (21-25, 25-15, 22-25, 25-21, 10-15) loss to the host team and 3 set victory over the Livingstone Blue Bears.
In game 1, sophomore
Tiara Ramey led the Trojans with 15 kills, while senior
Alexsys Pullen collected 10 kills.
The Rams took a quick lead at the beginning of set 1, but the Trojans battled back to get within 1 point of a tied set. Several back to back errors costed VSU the set 1 win. The Trojans came back for redemption in set 2, holding WSSU to only 15 points. Rams attack errors and Trojans kills gave VSU the 25-15 set 2 win. Set 3 mimicked set one, as the Trojans were just a few points shy of a win. After a block by sophomores
Sydney Uko and
Myia Jones to give VSU the 19-18 lead, the Rams came back to take the set.
To stay in the fight, VSU needed to secure set 4. Keeping a 1 point scoring gap, it was anyone's game. With a toggling lead, the Rams lost control giving the 5 consecutive points off of errors. There was no turning back as the Trojans snatched set 4, 25-21 win. Several errors by the Trojans in the deciding set, put the team at a disadvantage as they fell short 10-15.
Pullen and junior
Miranda Bass each rounded out the game with 18 assists each while senior
Adriana Hazou tallied 20 digs.
VSU snatched 3 quick sets in their match up over Livingstone Blue Bears in game 2. Ramey led the team with 10 kills and 5 digs while senior
Diamond Simpson tallied 9 assists.
Blue Bear errors and Trojans kills game the Trojans the 25-14, 25-9, and 25-15 wins.
After the first 2 matches of the event, VSU hold a 9-5 overall record, 6-2 in the conference.
The Trojans will face Johnson C. Smith for day 2 of the CIAA Round-up in Winston-Salem, NC. The first serve is set for 11am.
