Women’s Basketball Overpowers Lady Bulldogs, 66-46

Box Score ETTRICK, Va.- The Virginia State University women's basketball team overpowered the Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State University on January 27 with a final score of 66-46.

The win advances the Trojans to a 9-9 overall record, 4-4 in the conference. Bowie State falls to a 9-10 overall record, 2-7 in the CIAA.

VSU rounded out the night shooting 34.4 percent (22-64) from the field, 47.4 percent (9-19) from behind the arc and 61.9 percent (13-21) from the free throw line.
Junior Donae' Moguel (Los Angeles, CA) led the game for the Trojans, securing 16 points and chipping in 10 rebounds. Senior and CIAA Preseason pick Wynterra Pittman (Graceville, FL) controlled the game in rebounds, tallying 11 recoveries.

The CIAA Northern Division teams were equally matched early in the first quarter as both team battled for the lead. The Lady Bulldogs jumped ahead, 10-7, with a shot from behind the arc with 3:12 left in the quarter. The Trojans worked to close the scoring gap as junior Philandra Jordan (Woodbridge, VA) sunk a 3-pointer to end the quarter, 14-12, VSU trailing. The Trojans did not hesitate taking control of the second quarter, landing 2 back-to-back 3-pointers with under 8 minutes left in the half. Extending the scoring margin, the Trojans enter halftime in the lead with a score of 33-20.   

The Trojans maintained their momentum in the final 2 quarter of the contest, finishing the night with a final score of 66-46.

VSU secured their win by outscoring Bowie State in points off of turnovers (20-13), 2nd chance points (13-7), bench points (31-0), and baskets in the paint (20-12).

The Trojans will be taking the court on Saturday, January 30 in Lincoln, PA to face the Lady Lions of Lincoln University. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.

Mark your calendars for the Trojans next home game on Saturday, February 6 as VSU celebrates their Alumni Winter Festival at the Orange Out game.

The Virginia State Department of Athletics annual 1,000 cans, 1 goal campaign initiative is underway. The canned food items collected will be donated to the local food banks. The Department encourages all fans, alumni, faculty and friends to bring a canned food item to all of the home basketball games this season.
