Box Score RICHMOND, Va.-The Virginia State University women's basketball team fell to their I-95 rivals, Virginia Union University, on January 16 with a final score of 84-68. This was the first CIAA divisional contest for both teams.
The loss moves the Trojans to an 8-8 overall record, 3-3 in the conference while the Lady Panthers hold a 12-1 overall record, 4-1 in the CIAA.
VSU rounded out the game shooting 37.7 percent (23-61) from the field, 30.4 percent (7-23) from behind the arc and 83.3 percent (15-18) from the free throw line.
Juniors
Donae' Moguel (Los Angeles, CA) and
Philandra Jordan (Woodbridge, VA) each chipped in 11 points for the Trojans while junior
Joy Hickman (Wilmington, DE) rounded out the double-digit scoring with 10 points. Senior and All-CIAA Preseason Pick
Wynterra Pittman (Graceville, FL) led VSU in recoveries with 13 rebounds.
Pittman secured the first basket of the game, starting the Trojans off on their back and forth battle for the lead in the first quarter. VSU continued to fight until the Lady Panthers pulled away with 3 minutes left in the half. The Trojans went into the locker room trailing with a halftime score of 45-37.
In the final 2 quarters, VSU would not be able to regain the lead as the VUU Lady Panthers take the 84-68 victory.
The Trojans will be travel to Murfreesboro, NC on Wednesday, January 20 to take on the Chowan University Lady Hawks. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
The Virginia State Department of Athletics annual 1,000 cans, 1 goal campaign initiative is underway. The canned food items collected will be donated to the local food banks. The Department encourages all fans, alumni, faculty and friends to bring a canned food item to all of the home basketball games this season.
