Box Score ETTRICK, Va. – The Virginia State University women's basketball team fell short to the Johnson C. Smith Lady Golden Bulls in an overtime match up with a final score of 70-65.
The loss moves the Trojans to a 7-7overall record, 3-2 in the conference.
VSU shot 40.4 percent (23-57) from the field, 32.1 percent (9-28) from behind the arc and 55.6 percent (10-18) from the free throw line.
Junior
Nandi Taylor (Mt. Morris, Mich.) led the game with 19 points while junior newcomer
Donae' Moguel (Los Angeles, CA) stepped in with 12 points. Junior
Domonique Hagins (Washington, DC) tallied 11 points while junior
Philandra Jordan (Woodbridge, VA) rounded out the double-digit scoring with 10 points.
The Trojans kept a steady pace on the court as they worked to maintain their lead in the first and second quarters. It was a battle for the lead but VSU entered halftime trailing the Lady Golden Bulls, 33-30.
Several back-to-back shots by both teams in the second half, intensified the energy to win. VSU kept the lead for majority of the third court but lost it with a jumper by JCSU, bringing the score to 41-43 at the conclusion on the third quarter. The Lady Golden Bulls had an advantage in the fourth quarter, holding the lead. VSU bounced back and was able to tie the game 57-57 to go into overtime.
The Lady Golden Bulls increased the scoring gap during overtime, as the Trojans worked to take the lead. VSU was unable to capitalize off of the additional time on the clock, leaving them defeated with a final score of 65-70.
VSU will travel to West Virginia to take on the Bluefield State Blues on Thursday, January 14. Tip-off is set for 5:30pm.
The Virginia State Department of Athletics annual 1,000 cans, 1 goal campaign initiative is underway. The canned food items collected will be donated to the local food banks. The Department encourages all fans, alumni, faculty and friends to bring a canned food item to all of the home basketball games this season.
