Box Score 2 NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Virginia State University (VSU) Trojan baseball team had a split doubleheader against The Apprentice School (TAS) Builders on April 21. The Trojans fell short in game one with a final score of 4-2, but took down the Builders in game two with a score of 17-3. After a two game tally of 20 hits, the Trojans are currently 23-11 on the season.
Senior
Darryl Williams took the mound in game one keeping TAS down in the first two innings. The Builders posted the first run of the game in the 3
rd inning followed by an additional 3 runs in the 4
th. At the top of the 5
th inning, the Trojans trailed 4-0. TAS advanced senior
Nicholas Christopher with a walk at the top of the 6
th inning. Sophomore
David Markins hit a double to right field earning him an RBI as Christopher ran in for the point. After advancing to third on a ground out to center field, Markins ran home giving teammate, junior
Corey Grant, an RBI. VSU did not secure any runs in the 7
th inning, finishing the game with a 4-2 loss.
The Trojans were untouchable in game two securing 17 runs. The Builders posted the first 2 runs of the game at the bottom of the 1
st inning. Junior
Colton Gunn hit a double to left field then advanced to third after sophomore Jay Dee Johnson's single to right field. Gunn advanced home on a fielder's choice by teammate junior
Jamison Griffin bringing the score to 2-1.
The 3
rd inning was a game changer for VSU with 13 runs. Christopher started the inning off strong with a triple to center field and advancing home on a ground out to short stop by senior
Joshua Markins. After Gunn tied the game up 3-3 giving Johnson an RBI, there was no looking back for the Trojans. Gunn and Christopher led the inning with 2 runs each. The Markins brothers both secured a run along with Johnson, Grant, Griffin and junior
Nathan Anger. The score going into the bottom of the 3
rd inning was 14-3.
Griffin struck his second home run of the season in the 5
th inning earning him 3 RBIs.
Neither team scored in the 6
th or 7
th inning, sealing the Trojans 17-3 victory. Gunn is credited for the win with 6 strikeouts and only allowing 8 hits and 3 runs.
VSU will be back in action on Friday, April 24 for a single game against The Apprentice School Builders. This will be the last home game of the season and Senior Day for the Trojans. Come support VSU at 2 p.m. at the Whaley Colbert Field.
