Box Score ETTRICK, Va.- The Virginia State University baseball team concluded their first conference doubleheader of the season with a 1-1 record against the Hawks of Chowan University. The Trojans fell short in game 1 with a score of 6-3 and rallied back in game 2 with a score of 5-3. VSU is currently 14-6 on the season.
Junior
Tashaun Taylor led the Trojans in game 1 with 2 RBIs while junior
Colton Gunn took the loss, pitching 7 of the 8 innings.
The Trojans and the Hawks were evenly matched for majority of the game 1. Gunn only allowed the Hawks one run at the top of the second inning. After three consecutive innings with no runs, the Trojans came home with a run by rookie
Devin Walker giving Taylor an RBI. Neither team secured a run in the seventh inning taking the game into its 8
th inning.
Senior
Nathan Anger took over for Gunn on the mound. The Hawks had a boost of energy getting 5 runs. At the bottom of the 8
th with 2 outs on the board, Taylor secured another RBI as junior
Johnny Rowe earned a run. Taylor took advantage of the opportunity and stole home bring the score final score to 6-3.
Senior Zachary Jordan led the Trojans in game 2 with 2 runs and 2 RBIs while junior
Jay Dee Johnson, III took the win after pitching 7 innings.
Taylor ran home at the bottom of the first giving Jordan an RBI and putting the Trojans in the board. At the end of the 1
st inning, the score was 1-1. The Trojans capitalized on several plays earning them bases and runs. Jordan and senior
Joshua Markins gave VSU 2 runs in the 3
rd inning while senior
Nicholas Christopher and Jordan added 2 runs in the 6
th inning. The Hawks were overpowered as the Trojans gave them 3 consecutives outs, ending the game at the top of the 7
th innings with a score of 5-3.
The Trojans will take on the Chowan Hawks on Sunday, March 22 for their day 2 matchup. The first pitch is slated for 1 p.m. at Whaley Colbert Field on the campus of VSU.
