ETTRICK, Va. - The Virginia State University women's basketball team were triumphant over the Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State University on Wednesday, February 18 on its senior night in Daniel Gymnasium. Five Trojans were honored (
Da'Shae Jones,
Jessica Lyons,
Cana Marriott,
Tiffanie Adair, and
DeAnna Waters) in the postgame ceremony.
Senior
Da'Shae Jones led the evening with 24 points followed by senior
Jessica Lyons with 18 points, 8 rebounds and seniors Cana Marriot and
DeAnna Waters with 11 points each. Senior
Tiffanie Adair secured a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
The Trojans started out slow with but a steal by Marriott the momentum for the Trojans with a two point play. Jones come off the bench with a long three from the arc followed by a steal from sophomore Â
Joy Hickman with an assist to Lyons for a layup. The Trojans could not get a break from the fast Lady Bulldog offense with multiple fouls on the Trojans. Jones came back with a three pointer with 8:46 on the clock. Junior
Wynterra Pittman coming off the bench with back to back shots. The Trojans made a comeback to the lead ending the first half with a score of 45-44.
VSU commanded a strong run in the second half. The Trojans worked the court, as they continued to increase the scoring gap. Trojans called a primitive timeout at 36.9 with the score at 80-71. Sophomore
Philandra Jordan scored the final basket for the Trojans with a final score of 85-71.
The Trojans will be back in action on Thursday, February 19 to take on the Lady Panthers of Virginia Unions University. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. in Richmond, Va.
