ETTRICK, Va.-The VSU women's basketball team could not stand strong against the Elizabeth City State University Lady Vikings on February 14. VSU took a loss with a final score of 63-56.
Senior
Da'Shae Jones finished the night with 15 points and 3 assists while senior
Tiffanie Adair with 13 points and 8 rebounds. Â Senior
Cana Marriott came away with 9 points and 2 assists for the night.
Jones started the game off strong with a long shot from behind the arc. Senior
DeAnna Waters made crucial plays drawing back to back fouls resulting in 4 points for the Trojans. Water also came through with a good shot in the paint in the first 6 minutes. The Vikings returned the favor by Jasmine Nixon scoring a layup. Marriott scored a vital 3 point shot in the first half followed by an assist to Adair for 2 point play. The Trojans shot 44.4 percent in field goals finishing the first half trailing the Lady Vikings with a score 32-26.
The Trojans attempted to rally back but could not take a solid lead in the second half. Jones started the half with an explosive 3 pointer, but Jadda Jefferies of the Lady Vikings had a captivating night shooting 5-5 from the free throw line and 3 rebounds finishing the night with 21 points. Â The score in the second half was on a continuous 1 point deficit as the Trojans continued to fight. Jones and Adair brought in the final baskets with 2 free throws and a 3 point play. Falling short, the Trojans lost with a final score of 63-56.
VSU will face their I-95 rivals, Virginia Union University, on Monday, February 16 in Richmond, Va. Tipoff is set for 5:30pm.
