Women’s Basketball Falls to Fayetteville State

Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Virginia State University women's basketball team took their first conference loss of the season with a final score of 69-57 against the Lady Broncos of Fayetteville State University on December 17.

The loss moves the Trojans to a 4-6 overall record, 1-1 in the conference while the Lady Broncos advance to a 6-5 overall record, 1-1 in the conference

VSU shot 24.6 percent (16-65) from the field, 27.3 percent (6-22) from behind the arc and 73.3 percent (19-26) from the free throw line.

Junior newcomer Donae' Moguel (Los Angeles, CA) led the Trojans securing 15 points while senior and CIAA Preseason pick Wynterra Pittman (Graceville, FL) chipped in 9 points. Moguel and Pittman were equally matched, jumping up for 7 rebounds each.

It was a battle for the lead in the first quarter, as VSU and FSU played the court. The Trojans were able to stay in the game by capitalizing off of baskets made at the line. Junior Philandra Jordan (Woodbridge, VA) gave the Trojans their first lead of the game with a 3 pointer with 7:08 left in the second quarter. Despite the efforts by Moguel and junior Stephanie Brown (Philadelphia, PA) in the final minutes of the quarter, VSU entered halftime trailing the Lady Broncos, 31-29.

Several back-to-back shots at the beginning of the third quarter gave FSU an edge over the Trojans. VSU was able to bounce back, closing the 10 point margin and ending the third quarter trailing 46-44. The Trojans had a slow run in the final quarter of the game, securing majority of their points off of free throws while the Lady Broncos utilized open shots in the paint. Sophomore Antavia Stevens (Roanoke, VA) sunk 2 shots from behind the arc as the clock ran down, but it wasn't enough to steal the game. VSU ended their final road game of 2015 with a 69-57 loss.

The Trojans will be back in action for their final game of 2015 on Saturday, December 19 on the campus of VSU in Daniel Gymnasium. The team is set to play Salem International University, with a tip-off time of 3 p.m.

The Virginia State Department of Athletics annual 1,000 cans, 1 goal campaign initiative is underway. The canned food items collected will be donated to the local food banks. The Department encourages all fans, alumni, faculty and friends to bring a canned food item to all of the home basketball games this season.
