Box Score ETTRICK, Va.- The Virginia State University women's basketball team took down the Washington Adventist University Lady Shock on December 13 with a final score of 74-48.
VSU shot 46.9 percent (23-49) from the field, 41.2 percent (7-17) from behind the arc and 65.6 percent (21-32) from the free throw line.
Taking the helm of the game was junior
Nandi Taylor (Mt. Morris, MI) with 11 points, followed by senior
Wynterra Pittman (Graceville, FL) with 10 points. Sophomore and VSU newcomer
Stephanie Brown (Philadelphia, PA) jumped up leading the Trojans with 9 rebounds.
VSU worked to take control of the game early in the first quarter. A shot from behind the arc by junior
Philandra Jordan (Woodbridge, VA ) with 5:41 left in the first quarter gave the Trojans the needed drive to take charge of the game.
Nandi Taylor moved the Trojans into a double digit lead with a three pointer at the end of the first quarter with a score of 17-7. There was no turning back in the second quarter, as VSU increased the scoring gap.
Stephanie Brown led the half with 7 points and 9 rebounds. The Trojans entered halftime with a 32-18 lead.
Taking the court for the remaining two quarters, VSU kept their momentum to overpower the Lady Shocks. It was a team effort to take the win as the Trojans reach a game lead of 32 points. The Lady Shocks attempted to bounce back, but fell short as the Trojans took the 74-48 victory.
The Trojans will be taking the court on Tuesday, December 15 in Raleigh, NC to face the Lady Falcons of St. Augustine's University. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
The Virginia State Department of Athletics annual 1,000 cans, 1 goal campaign initiative is underway. The canned food items collected will be donated to the local food banks. The Department encourages all fans, alumni, faculty and friends to bring a canned food item to all of the home basketball games this season.
