Box Score ETTRICK, Va.- The Virginia State University Trojan volleyball team gave the Chowan University Hawks their first CIAA Northern Division loss on Nov. 9 after 5 sets.
The victory advances the Trojans to a 17-8 overall record, 11-3 in the conference and 8-1 in the northern division. The Hawks were setback to a 16-7 overall record, 13-2 in the conference and 8-1 in the northern division.
Rookie
Tiara Ramey (Grovetown, GA) to the helm of the game posting 20 kills and collecting 24 digs while teammate junior
Adriana Hazou led the game with 30 digs.
Ashley Tutherow of the Hawks chipped in 18 kills for her team while Cindy Ehrich collected 27 digs.
The Trojans did not hesitate to step in and dominate the court in set 1. VSU maintained their set 1 led to take the 25-17 win.
It was a back and forth struggle for the lead in set 2. The final 3 kills of the set for VSU by junior Deirdre Carter (Winchester, VA) were not enough to take the win. VSU fell short in set 2, 23-25.
Set 3 mimicked set 2 as the battle continued. The Trojans found themselves tied 22-22 with the Hawks for the set win. Chowan took advantage of the opportunity and secured 2 points, bring the score to 22-24. VSU capitalized off of 3 kills and a Hawks error for the 26-24 set win.
VSU lost momentum in the 4
th set taking a 19-25 loss, but recharged for final set. The crowd went wild as the Trojans fought for the victory. The Trojans worked to stay focus as the team tied 13-13. Senior
Brookie Dargan (Newport News, VA) chipped in a kill followed by and attack error on Chowan to give the Trojan 15-13 set win and the game victory.
The Trojans will take the court of Daniel Gymnasium for the last match of the regular season on Nov. 14 at 2pm. VSU will host the Lady Vikings of Elizabeth City State University for the Senior Day game.
The Virginia State Department of Athletics annual 1,000 cans, 1 goal campaign initiative is underway. The canned food items collected will be donated to the local food banks. The Department encourages all fans, alumni, faculty and friends to bring a canned food item to all of the home volleyball and football games this season.
