Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, NC- The Virginia State University volleyball team secured a spot in Saturday's CIAA Semi-Final match after topping the Fayetteville State University Lady Broncos 3-0 on Friday evening. The Lady Trojans advance with a 19-8 overall record while the Lady Broncos end the season with a 12-12 mark.
Virginia State grabbed a 25-21 victory in the opening set, clipped the Lady Broncos 26-24 in the second set and edged Fayetteville State 25-22 in the third set to clinch the victory.
Rookie
Tiara Ramey (Grovetown, GA) led the effort for the Trojans with 12 kills while senior
Brookie Dargan (Newport News, VA) tallied 10 kills on the evening. Sophomore
Miranda Bass (Newberry, FL) notched 18 assists while junior
Diamond Simpson (Decator, GA) added 11 assists. Junior
Adriana Hazou (Woodbridge, VA) hauled in a match-high 23 digs.
In the first set, both teams battled to gain a solid lead. Holding a narrow 16-15 advantage, the Trojans pulled away 21-16 behind kills by Ramey. Virginia State maintained the lead for the remainder of the set and secured the 25-21 win using a Fayetteville State attack error.
The second set was tightly contested with neither team able to gain a lead of more than five points throughout the duration. With the score tied 24-24, a kill by Ramey restored the advantage to Virginia State, and an attack error by the Lady Broncos resulted in the 26-24 set win for the Trojans.
In set three, Virginia State ran away with an early 10-5 lead. The Lady Broncos stayed close on the Trojans' heels but ultimately were unable to overcome the deficit. A kill by Ramey secured the 25-22 victory for Virginia State, resulting in the 3-0 match victory for the Trojans.
Virginia State returns to Capel Arena on Saturday, November 21 for the CIAA Semi-Final contest. The Trojans take on Winston-Salem State at 5:00pm.
