Box Score LINCOLN, Pa. – The Virginia State University Trojan Football Team moves to 5-3 overall record, 3-2 in the conference after ousting the Lincoln University Lions with a final score of 35-0 on October 24.
Junior running back
Kavon Bellamy (Hampton, VA) led the Trojans offense recording 243 rushing yards on 22 carries and 3 touchdowns. "It has been a tough season dealing with the ankle injury feels good to be healthy again, "said Bellamy. "I told my O-line all week let's get back to doing what we do."
Junior quarterback
Tarian Ayres (Dillwyn, VA) completed 8 of 13 passes for 93 yards while senior Javion Smallwood (Virginia Beach, VA) chipped in a single touchdown with 61 yards and 5 receptions.
The Trojan defense was pioneered by junior linebacker
Geo Feggins (South Hill, VA) who recorded 10 total tackles and 2.5 sacks. Sophomore
Brandon Lynch (Norfolk, VA) was not too far behind with 8 total tackles and clinched his first career touchdown.
VSU took charge of the contest on their second drive of the game and never looked back. A 59 yard run by Bellamy to the Lions 17 yard line set the Trojans up for a 5 yard touchdown run four plays later.
After several third down conversions in the 1
st quarter, the Lions lost focus and fumbled the ball at the VSU 39 yard line. Lynch was in the right place at the right time to recover the ball and run in a 60 yard touchdown to end the quarter 14-0.
Early in the second quarter, the Trojans worked together to move the ball down the field. After a LU encroachment penalty, Ayres found sophomore wide receiver
Josh Harris (Mechanicsville, VA) for a 12 yard reception. The Trojans continue play the field to advance Bellamy into the end zone on a 3 yard run. With the momentum still in the Trojans favor, defense forced the Lions to punt on 4th and 15 on their first drive of the second half.
Ayres linked up with Smallwood on the second down in the 3
rd quarter for a 27 yard reception in Lions territory. The Trojans continued to march to the goal line for a 6 yard rush by Bellamy for a Trojans touchdown. VSU left their final mark on the scoreboard with under five minutes left in the 3
rd quarter. Ayres found an opening to Smallwood for a 10 yard touchdown pass giving the Trojans a 35-0 lead.
A blocked punt at the start of the fourth quarter gave the Lions field possession to start their drive at the VSU 22 yard line. Sophomore linebacker
Malik Sexton (Portsmouth, VA) checked in with a tackle for a loss of 2 yards on first down followed by Feggins putting an end to the Lions drive with back to back sacks.
The football team will travel to Murfreesboro, NC on October 31 to take on the Chowan University Hawks. Kickoff is set for 3pm.
The Virginia State Department of Athletics annual 1,000 cans, 1 goal campaign initiative is underway. The canned food items collected will be donated to the local food banks. The Department encourages all fans, alumni, faculty and friends to bring a canned food item to all of the home volleyball and football games this season.
