Box Score ETTRICK, Va. - The Trojans won their second consecutive CIAA Northern Division after conquering the Lady Hawks of Chowan University on January 21 in Daniel Gymnasium with a final score of 71-56.
 
Senior Da'Shae Jones scored 23 points, assisting the Trojans in shooting 52.2% from the field, 40% from behind the arc and 61.3% from the free throw line. Senior Jessica Lyons, lead the Trojans with 5 assist while collecting 8 points. VSU also got 6 points from senior Tiffanie Adair while junior Wynterra Pittman lead the bench scorers with a season high 13 points and 9 rebounds.
 
Virginia State started the game off strong with a big three pointer made by Jones as the 25 second clock expired. The Lady Hawks would respond right back tying the game at 3-3 with a three point baskets made by Rachel Gostomski followed by two consecutive layups by Jordan Payne giving the Lady Hawks an earlier 7-3 lead . After the 15 minute media timeout, the Trojans gained momentum after a great fast break layup made by senior Cana Marriott. The Trojans never look back in the first half.
 
In the second half, the Trojans were in the lead, 46-31. After a late Lady Hawks rally, led by Naima Harrington had a late rally for the Lady Hawks getting her team within 10 points of a tied game. Soon after, Marriott clutched a two point basket, followed by two good free throws by Junior Braxtyn Talton.  The Trojans would keep the Lady Hawks down after Junior Miesha Adams connected on consecutive layups which gave the Trojans a commanding 64- 55 lead with 1:32 left in the game. After securing several free throw baskets, the Trojans finished off Chowan with a final score of 71- 56.
 
VSU will travel to take on their northern division opponent, Elizabeth City State University, on Saturday, January 24 at 3 p.m.
