| Box Score 2

CHEYNEY, Pa. – The Virginia State University volleyball team opened up its 2014 campaign with a win over Cheyney University of Pennsylvania 3-0 and the University of Science in Philadelphia 3-2 Saturday afternoon. It was the first action each of the schools has seen this year.

Imani Wood, Dierdre Carter and Alexsys Pullen led the Trojans with eight kills; each in the win over Cheyney.

Adriana Hazou chipped in 17 digs; while she and Diamond Simpson added six assists each to aid the effort.

In the first match of the day, the Trojans jumped off to a good start; maintaining momentum and never looking back to secure a 25-15 set.

In the second, both teams went point for point, tying the game at 5-all. Virginia State boasted a 5-0 run en route to a 25-19 set.

In the third, the Trojans dismantled the Lady Wolves as Cheyney surrendered five points to claim set three with a 25-14 victory.

Head coach Rose Burke said, "I am really proud of the way my players played today. Everyone contributed to our victories."

Virginia State took a loss in their first loss in the second match of the day against the University of Science, 25-18. The Trojans would bounce back with two quick wins in the second and third set, 25-21 and 25-20.

But just as things looked to be going the Trojans way, the Devils came stomping back to win set four with a score of 25-11 to take the game to its fifth and final set on the day.

Both teams battled continuously until the Trojans were able to take advantage and clinch the victory over the Devils in set five, 21-19.

Burke explained "In our second match, there were points where we could have given up but they fought hard and were patient with themselves. I'm very proud of what we accomplish this weekend."

Pullen led the Trojans wil 13 kills, following Wood's 12 kills and 12 digs in the win. Simpson pitched in 15 assists while Miranda Bass chipped in 10 assists

Virginia State ends the weekend with a 2-0 record.

The Trojans return to action on September 10th when they travel to Randolph-Macon College for a 7 p.m. match.
