Box Score RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia State volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to I-95 arch-rival Virginia Union on Monday. The loss sinks the Trojans to 4-4 on the season while the Lady Panthers improve to 5-5 on the year.
Virginia State was unable to find the rhythm for the night, as Virginia Union came out firing in the match. The Lady Panthers took the first set, 25-18 using a balanced offensive attack to take a 1-0 lead. The Lady Panthers jumped out early on the Trojans again in the second set, but Virginia State mounted a small rally to draw within three near the end.
A 4-0 run, which was maintained by VSU errors, sealed the second set on a kill for the Lady Panthers. Virginia Union would go on to seal the match in the third set, as the Trojans suffered a setback, dropping the final frame, 25-22 and the set, 3-0.
Dierdre Carter led the Trojans with nine kills on the night, while also pacing Virginia State with nine total digs.
Miranda Bass totaled 23 assists while
Adriana Hazou turned in 12 assists and both
Brianna Small and
Grand Roberson tallied six kills on the night.
Virginia State will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 27 when they travel to Charlotte, N.C. to face Winston-Salem State in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Round-Up. First serve is slated for noon.
